In the early morning hours of January 2, Compton witnessed a street takeover that took a violent turn, resulting in the ransacking of a local family-owned bakery. The incident led to multiple arrests, including the apprehension of the driver who allegedly rammed a stolen car through the storefront of Ruben’s Bakery. The same driver faced charges related to another recent viral robbery at a Carson 7-Eleven, where a Los Angeles County deputy intervened.

LA County Sheriff Robert Luna disclosed the arrest of five suspects during a press conference on Tuesday evening, shedding light on the gravity of the situation.

Details of the Street Takeover

At approximately 3:30 a.m., a Kia Soul forcefully collided with the front of Ruben’s Bakery, creating an opening for thieves to enter. Security footage captured the chaotic scene as a crowd of around 100 people rushed into the store, resulting in extensive looting. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) estimated the cost of the robbery to be over $40,000, accounting for stolen items and damages.

The Aftermath: Community Support and Reopening

Following the heartbreaking incident, Ruben Ramierez Jr., whose family owns the bakery, expressed the devastation of witnessing years of hard work destroyed in a matter of minutes. However, with the support of the community, Ruben’s Bakery managed to reopen within a few days. A GoFundMe campaign, initiated to aid the business, successfully raised over $90,000.

Arrests and Legal Proceedings

Sheriff Luna announced the arrest of the alleged driver responsible for the bakery break-in on January 12. Due to the suspect being a juvenile, they were released to their family. However, on the same day, the same suspect faced additional charges for other robberies in the area, including the 7-Eleven incident. The suspect is currently held in a juvenile detention center.

On Tuesday morning, four more individuals were arrested in connection to the Ruben’s Bakery robbery. As of Tuesday, three of them remain in custody, while the fourth has been released.

Rebuilding and Moving Forward

Despite the challenges, Ruben’s Bakery, buoyed by community solidarity, demonstrated resilience by reopening its doors. The financial support garnered through the GoFundMe campaign played a crucial role in facilitating the recovery of the small business. The incident, though unfortunate, underscores the significance of community support in overcoming adversity.

This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the importance of community solidarity and the role it plays in helping businesses recover from unforeseen challenges. The impact of such incidents extends beyond the immediate material losses, emphasizing the need for collective efforts in fostering a safe and supportive environment.
