A Proud Legacy: Coloradoโs Longest-Running Gay Rodeo
The Colorado Gay Rodeo Association proudly boasts over four decades of history, organizing the iconic Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo annually in Denver. Established over 40 years ago, this event not only showcases thrilling rodeo performances but also champions local charitable causes, embodying the spirit of community support and inclusion.
Jordan Roberts, a representative of the Colorado Gay Rodeo Association, emphasizes the significance of this enduring tradition. “I don’t think many people know that we’ve had a rodeo for 41 years,” Roberts shares. “A gay rodeo, in fact, for 41 years, and I think that’s what makes Colorado so special.”
Breaking Stereotypes: Diversity in Rodeo Sports
While some may perceive rodeo as a traditional, conservative sport, the Rocky Mountain Regional challenges stereotypes with its inclusive approach. Christina Miner, holding the title of Ms. International Gay Rodeo 2024, highlights the event’s embrace of diversity. “What may not be accepted as the norm is accepted here at our rodeo,” Miner affirms.
The rodeo features classic events like bull riding alongside unique attractions, including drag queen performances, symbolizing the celebration of individuality and self-expression within the LGBTQ+ community.
Fostering Community and Charity
Beyond its cultural significance, the Rocky Mountain Regional serves as a vital platform for philanthropy. Contestants from across the nation converge in Denver, raising substantial funds that benefit various charitable organizations throughout Colorado. In the previous year alone, the event amassed an impressive $12,000 for charitable causes.
Looking ahead, Jordan Roberts expresses ambitious goals for the upcoming event, aiming to surpass six figures in fundraising. “This year we’re focusing on six figures, that’s our big goal,” Roberts states, underscoring the event’s commitment to making a tangible difference in the community.
