Organizers of the Denver Juneteenth Music Festival are gearing up to host a weekend-long celebration in honor of the Juneteenth holiday. This annual event, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, is set to take place in the Mile High City from June 14 to June 16, 2024.
Parade and Block Party
The festivities kick off on Saturday, June 15, at 11 a.m. with a vibrant parade starting from Manual High School and concluding on Welton Street. Welton Street holds historical significance as part of the Five Points neighborhood, also known as the Harlem of the West due to its rich cultural heritage and association with jazz music.
The main event, a block party spanning Welton Street from 24th to 29th Street, will feature live music, food vendors, and community activities throughout the weekend.
Honoring Chauncey Billups
This year’s festival will pay tribute to former NBA star Chauncey Billups, a Denver native who has made significant contributions both on and off the basketball court. Billups will receive the Juneteenth Music Festival Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his achievements and his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Juneteenth Recognition
Juneteenth, which gained federal holiday status in 2021, holds particular significance in Colorado. In 2022, the state officially recognized Juneteenth as a legal holiday, marking it as a day to celebrate freedom and reflect on the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout history.
Featured Performances
Renowned rapper and actor Bow Wow will headline a free concert on the main stage on Sunday, June 16, showcasing a diverse lineup of musical talent. Additionally, the festival will offer a range of family-friendly activities, including bouncy castles, dunk tanks, and dance competitions, providing entertainment for attendees of all ages.
Dream Big Awards
The festival will also present the Dream Big Awards to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to their communities. Recipients include Dr. Ryan Ross, CEO of the Urban Leadership Foundation of Colorado, and Bianca Emerson, president of Colorado Black Women for Political Action, among others.
Additional Events
