Members of the Detroit Police Department gathered at Old St. Mary’s Church in Greek Town on Friday to honor fallen colleagues in their yearly inter-faith service.

The solemn event began with a memorial march, commencing at Monroe Street and Brush Street, where officers and community members paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Chief James White, speaking at the service, expressed the emotional weight of the occasion: Every single year I have participated in this, it breaks your heart to hear the names and see the pictures.

Remembering the Fallen

Families of the fallen officers, enduring the perpetual pain of loss, were present to receive the heartfelt tribute from their extended police family. Chief White emphasized the significance of acknowledging their enduring grief, stating, That pain is with them every single day.

Highlighting the legacy of those who are no longer with us, Chief White commemorated several officers: Officer Isam Mohammad Qasem, end of watch: September 28, 2020. He died as a result of being shot in the line of duty in 1995.

Honoring All Sacrifices

The service also recognized the sacrifices made beyond the line of duty. Chief White paid homage to Lieutenant Frederick Bowens, whose end of watch was marked on March 13, 2023, due to complications of Covid-19. White remarked, He came to work, he caught Covid, died from complications of Covid and that’s as heroic as anything else.

Chief White underscored the inherent heroism within the police force, stating, I am in awe at their level of commitment and heroics to this City every single day.
