Belmont Shore, Long Beach – Domenico’s, the iconic restaurant on Second Street, is set to celebrate its 70th anniversary this Friday with a series of special events and menu offerings. Founded in 1954 by Domenico and Beverly Spano, the restaurant has become a beloved fixture in the community, known for its original pizza recipe and longstanding traditions.
A Taste of History: Domenico’s Original Pizza Recipe
From its inception, Domenico’s introduced Long Beach to a unique pizza experience. Contrary to conventional methods, the restaurant layers mozzarella cheese first on the dough, followed by marinara sauce and a variety of toppings. This approach, according to current owner Mike Rhodes, preserves the authenticity of Domenico’s original recipe.
Milestones and Memorabilia: A Journey Through Time
Throughout its history, Domenico’s has seen significant milestones, including a size expansion in the 1960s and ownership changes. Notably, a photograph featuring a young Barbara Sinatra, Domenico’s cousin, hangs on the wall, showcasing the restaurant’s ties to local legends.
Community Recognition and Celebrations
To commemorate its 70th anniversary, Domenico’s will receive accolades from the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, the Belmont Shore Business Association, and Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson. The ceremony will include the dedication of the alley behind the restaurant as Domenico’s Drive, highlighting its impact on the local landscape.
Special Anniversary Offerings
Starting at 5 p.m., patrons can enjoy select pizza and pasta dishes priced at $19.54, a nod to the year the restaurant first opened. Accompanying these specials is a salad featuring Domenico’s renowned creamy garlic dressing, further honoring its culinary legacy.
Beyond Belmont Shore: Expanding Horizons
In 2021, Mike Rhodes expanded the Domenico’s brand with Domenico’s on the Lake in Mission Viejo, offering a diverse menu that includes steaks, seafood, and brunch options. This expansion reflects Rhodes’ commitment to bringing quality dining experiences to Southern California.
Continuing the Legacy
Since acquiring Domenico’s in 2004, Rhodes has introduced new pasta dishes while preserving its pizza heritage. Under his stewardship, the restaurant has maintained its community-focused ethos, emphasizing the importance of hiring genuinely kind individuals over specific culinary skills.
