Hundreds of families affected by tragedy gather in the East Bay for a healing event.
SAN LEANDRO, Calif. – This weekend, the East Bay will witness a powerful gathering as hundreds of families impacted by the loss of loved ones to violence come together for a healing walk. Among them are mothers who have experienced the unimaginable pain of losing a child.
Turning Pain into Purpose
For Lorrain Taylor, February 8, 2000, marked a tragic turning point when her twin sons, Albade Taylor and Obadiah Taylor, were fatally shot in an Oakland parking lot at just 22 years old. Recalling the devastating moment, Taylor reflects on the profound impact it had on her life. Despite the anguish, Taylor found strength through her faith and the support of her community.
Forming Support Networks
Driven by her own experience, Taylor founded 1000 Mothers to Prevent Violence, a support group aimed at providing solace and guidance to mothers facing similar tragedies. Through this initiative, she connected with mothers like Shantee Baker of Berkeley, who lost her daughter, Jessica Kingeter, to violence in 2012.
Coping and Healing Together
For these mothers, staying active and engaged within their community has been essential for coping with their grief. Recognizing the importance of communal healing, they emphasize the need for collective support to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.
Mourning Motherโs Walk for Healing Returns
After a hiatus due to the pandemic, the Mourning Mother’s Walk for Healing is set to return on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at San Leandro Marina Park. The event will feature a two-mile walk, followed by brunch and live entertainment. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with admission priced at $25, with all proceeds benefiting the group’s services across the Bay Area.
A Welcoming Community
While initially formed by mothers, the event has grown to include fathers and welcomes participation from all members of the community. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and solidarity that can emerge from shared experiences of loss and healing.
Conclusion: A Journey of Healing
The East Bay Mothers’ Walk for Healing stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of those who have endured the profound loss of a loved one to violence. Through support networks and communal gatherings like this, families find solace and solidarity as they navigate their journey of healing and remembrance.
