In a heartwarming celebration of love and commitment, an elderly couple in Louisville, Kentucky, marked their 66th wedding anniversary at a retirement community in the eastern part of the city.
Childhood Memories and Chance Encounter
Gaylord Churchill Long, 88, hails from Louisville, where he spent his youth and worked as a lifeguard at the now-defunct Shelby Park pool in 1957. On the other hand, Benita Collins Long, 86, was born in Letcher County. Her journey to Louisville was serendipitous as she came to visit her aunt and explore educational opportunities.
Their paths crossed at the pool where Gaylord worked, where a playful splash initiated a connection that would endure for over six decades.
From First Date to Lifetime of Love
Their inaugural date took them to the Loew’s Palace Theatre, which later became the Louisville Palace Theatre, to watch Gone With The Wind. This memorable outing laid the foundation for their enduring bond, culminating in their wedding on February 16, 1957.
Academic and Professional Pursuits
Gaylord pursued higher education at the University of Virginia, Sullivan Business College, and the University of Louisville Speed School, earning an engineering degree. His career as an engineer at Brown and Williamson was complemented by Benita’s educational journey, which included attending Whitesburg High School and Sullivan Business College before working as a purchasing agent for the Jefferson County Board of Education.
Shared Passions and Lifelong Companionship
Throughout their lives, the couple shared a love for travel and music, even playing together in a Jazz band during their leisure time. Today, they enjoy their golden years together at The Grand Senior Living center, cherishing each moment as they reflect on their journey.
The Key to Long-Lasting Love
Gaylord attributes the longevity of their marriage to the simple philosophy of always saying yes. Their enduring commitment has blessed them with two children, Sheree and Gaylord Timothy, who undoubtedly stand as testaments to their enduring love.
