Township Supervisor Bob Cannon revealed that the company was unlawfully storing canisters of nitrous oxide, sparking the catastrophic incident.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Supervisor Bob Cannon expressed disbelief that such hazardous materials were being kept on the premises without proper authorization. Had we known about these containers, Cannon stated, we would have taken immediate action to remove them and address the violations through legal channels.

Products and Companies Involved

Select Distributors, primarily catering to liquor stores and gas stations, supplied a range of items including cellphone chargers and vaping products. The warehouse, located at the intersection of 15 Mile Road and Groesbeck Highway, also housed another entity named Goo, described by Township Building Director Barry Miller as a storefront with storage facilities for merchandise.

Goo specializes in whipped cream chargers, which are contained in heavy canisters similar to those found scattered across Clinton Township after the explosions.

Hazardous Materials and Import Records

The canisters of nitrous oxide, labeled with warnings of fire and explosion risks, were reportedly imported by Select Distributors’ president, Noor Kestou, from China. Import records from November revealed the acquisition of these potentially dangerous materials.

Township Fire Chief Tim Duncan highlighted the alarming inventory stored by Select Distributors, including butane containers and lighter fluid, underscoring the magnitude of the safety hazards.

In light of the unauthorized storage of flammable materials, Supervisor Cannon emphasized that there would be consequences for the negligence. People have done things wrong, very wrong, Cannon asserted, and we don’t like it, and we’re not going to accept it.
