Las Vegas, NV – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reports a troubling rise in fatal crashes this year, prompting intensified efforts to enhance road safety with the reinstatement of their DUI prevention team.

According to Metro Police data, there have been 75 fatalities on Las Vegas roadways so far this year, compared to 60 during the same period last year. Approximately 20% of these fatalities involved impairment from drugs or alcohol, highlighting a significant safety concern.

Reinforcement of DUI Strike Team

In response to these alarming statistics, Metro Police recently revived their specialized DUI Strike Team. This team, consisting of ten officers, operates seven days a week from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. Their primary objective is to proactively identify and intercept impaired drivers before they cause fatal accidents.

Lt. Anthony Cavaricci emphasized the critical role of this initiative: If we remove impaired drivers from the roadway before they kill somebody, it will definitely make a pretty good improvement in our fatal numbers.

Since its reinstatement on May 18, the DUI Strike Team has already conducted approximately 60 DUI-related arrests. These officers are trained to detect impaired drivers actively, rather than merely responding to collision incidents.

Cavaricci underscored the urgency of their mission, stating, Those drivers are out there with us, on the roadway. It’s unnerving, I don’t know if you have children or not, but just to think about driving with your child and to get t-boned by a drunk driver is terrifying.
