Pushing for Change in South Fort Worth
In a bid to transform outcomes for residents in south Fort Worth, Pastor Kyev Tatum of Mt. Rose Church is spearheading a unique initiative. Tatum aims to offer individuals a second chance by introducing them to the world of coffee as an alternative to dealing drugs. He aptly describes the endeavor as Same grams, different grind.
Collaboration with Texas A&M University
Tatum’s innovative approach has garnered support from Texas A&M University’s Center for Coffee Research. Drawing inspiration from the center’s work in international settings, Tatum proposed leveraging coffee to stimulate economic growth in inner cities. Texas A&M embraced the idea, recognizing the potential to bring about positive change.
Community Engagement
Johnny Wallace, a former participant in the street drug trade, enthusiastically supports Tatum’s vision. Wallace, acknowledging his past involvement with grams, expresses his commitment to embracing a new perspective and channeling efforts into the coffee initiative.
Expansion and Transformation
A notable success story in the realm of coffee entrepreneurship is Firegrounds Coffee Co., founded in 2019 by Dallas firefighters Paul Clarke and Kyle Lund. The company’s expansion into over 326 Walmart stores in Texas reflects the growing interest and demand for specialty coffee.
As part of a five-year cooperative effort with Texas A&M, Tatum plans to repurpose his childhood home into the Prayer Room Coffee House. This transformative project will involve preserving the historical integrity of the house while incorporating modern amenities, such as dorm rooms and a specialty coffee kitchen.
Funding and Support
When questioned about funding, Tatum humbly acknowledges the divine providence thus far. However, he expresses openness to investors who share the vision of catalyzing positive change through the coffee initiative. Wallace echoes Tatum’s sentiment, emphasizing the potential for success with collaborative support.
A Vision for Transformation
While Pastor Tatum remains the driving force behind the coffee initiative, the partnership with Texas A&M Center for Coffee Research underscores the collaborative effort to effect meaningful change. Beyond merely brewing coffee, the project aspires to brew new lives and opportunities for individuals in south Fort Worth.
