COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center is facing a dire situation as it announces reaching full capacity. With over 300 dogs in their care, the shelter’s kennels are brimming, prompting urgent calls for adoption and support.

Prioritizing Urgent Needs

Dwayne Young Jr., Assistant Director of Operations at the shelter, emphasized the critical need to prioritize intake. We do not euthanize for any time or space so a dog can be here for a whole year which is not ideal, but we don’t euthanized to make space at all, Young stated. The shelter is focusing on admitting dogs with medical or behavioral emergencies, such as those injured or involved in aggressive incidents.

Adoption Incentives and Support

To alleviate overcrowding, the shelter is offering special adoption deals until April 30. Dogs aged six months and older can be adopted for just $18, and all lost dog reclaim fees have been waived. Additionally, free microchips are provided for dogs being reunited with their families.

Sleepover Program

Innovatively, the shelter allows potential adopters to host dogs for sleepovers. You can hold on to that dog for two or three days, giving us time to create a little space, Young explained. This temporary arrangement not only provides relief for the shelter but also gives potential adopters a chance to bond with the dogs.

How to Help

The Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center welcomes donations to support their efforts. They urgently require large to extra-large dog crates for foster homes and appreciate donations of chewy dog treats and dry dog food for their Community Pet Pantry.

Take Action

For those interested in adopting a furry friend, no appointment is necessary, and walk-ins are encouraged. Potential adopters can view available dogs on the shelter’s website.
