A Franklin County man’s extravagant shopping spree worth $30,000 came to an abrupt halt as he found himself facing 21 theft charges and a trip to jail. Mark Long, the indicted individual, stands accused of participating in a scheme aimed at financing drug purchases, according to reports from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Surveillance Footage Unveils Shoplifting Scheme

Surveillance footage released by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office sheds light on the elaborate shoplifting operation. The video captured Long, along with an accomplice, surreptitiously pocketing high-end perfumes from Sephora on Olentangy River Road without making any payments.

Detective Caleb Loposser remarked on the methodical nature of their actions, stating, You see their behavior is very direct. They go to a specific location cause they’ve done this at least 11 times at this location alone. Additionally, the duo targeted the nearby Target store on Olentangy River Road as part of their illicit activities.

Pre-planned Theft Operation

The criminal enterprise orchestrated by Long and his associates extended beyond the act of shoplifting itself. Detective Loposser revealed that convenience store workers provided the perpetrators with shopping lists, prompting them to steal designated items in exchange for a share of the profits. These stolen goods were then repurchased at a discounted rate and resold, fueling the cycle of theft.

Long confessed to utilizing his earnings from the illegal scheme to procure fentanyl, a potent opioid. Detectives estimate that Long’s involvement in thefts or attempted thefts amassed approximately $30,000 worth of merchandise, primarily comprising perfumes from Sephora and electronics from Target stores.

Wide Range of Locations Targeted

The scope of the operation spanned several locations across Franklin County, including:

• Sephora outlets on Olentangy River Road and Stoneridge Drive
• Target stores on North High Street, Graceland Boulevard, and Morse Crossing

Concerns Raised by Law Enforcement

Detective Loposser expressed concerns regarding the potential escalation of such criminal activities, particularly in crowded shopping environments. He emphasized the impact on individuals’ daily lives, highlighting the risk of traumatic experiences for unsuspecting shoppers and workers.

Despite the significant financial losses incurred, there have been no reported incidents of injuries to shoppers or employees thus far. However, law enforcement remains vigilant in their pursuit of three persons of interest and the suspect vehicle, described as a red Hyundai Tucson.

Mark Long is slated to appear in court on Friday, April 12, to face the litany of charges against him. Chief Deputy Rick Minerd of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office underscored the dual nature of such crimes, acknowledging the role of addiction in driving opportunistic thefts while also targeting those who profit from such illicit activities.
