A special needs senior at Kennedy High School in Fremont, California, was among several people injured in a pellet gun attack near the school campus on Wednesday afternoon.

Josh Hawkins, a senior at Kennedy High School, was looking forward to his final days as a student. However, a gel gun attack near the campus left him with physical and emotional scars. Hawkins, who has special needs, was accompanied by his teacher, a paraprofessional educator, and a classmate with special needs when the incident occurred around noon.

The group had just finished lunch at Papa Nacho’s Taquería in the Sundale Shopping Center and was walking back to campus along Stevenson Boulevard near Blacow Road. Hawkins sustained marks on his right arm and elbow from the gel pellets.

Steve Dotson, Hawkins’ father, described the impact on his son and his classmate. While Josh managed to return to school, his friend, Matthew, was too shaken to continue and went home. The Fremont Unified School District confirmed the attack and emphasized its commitment to student and staff safety. Superintendent CJ Cammack reassured the community that such incidents are rare in Fremont.

The Fremont police are actively investigating the incident. Preliminary information suggests the gel beads were fired from a vehicle traveling northbound on Blacow Road. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but the emotional impact on the victims was significant.
