TUCSON, Ariz. – Residents of Tucson’s west side, drawn by the area’s natural beauty and scenic vistas, are taking action to combat a persistent problem: litter. Led by the Gates Pass Area Neighborhood Association (GPANA), locals armed with buckets and trash grabbers hit the streets to clean up their community.

Advocating for a Cleaner Community

Founded in 1988, the GPANA is dedicated to addressing the concerns of community members. Donna Snyder, President of the Neighborhood Association, expressed her dismay at the sight of accumulating trash. It’s just very disheartening to see all the trash pile up again, she remarked.

A Variety of Debris

During their clean-up efforts, volunteers encounter a wide array of litter, ranging from disposable spoons and cups to discarded beer cans. Denise Garland, a participant in the cleanup, highlighted the prevalence of drivers tossing trash out of their windows, contributing to the neighborhood’s litter problem. A lot of people will drink little bottles of alcohol and throw out the plastic bottles, Garland explained.

Unusual Finds and Community Engagement

In addition to more common litter items, volunteers also unearthed unexpected debris, including a piece of a car and a garbage disposal. Despite the challenges posed by littering, the community remains engaged in efforts to maintain a cleaner environment.

Continuing the Clean-Up Efforts

The GPANA’s commitment to a cleaner community is evident in their ongoing efforts. Scheduled for April 13, the association plans another clean-up initiative along Speedway and Camino de Oeste, extending their impact beyond residential areas.
