Louisville, Ky. – The Last Mile to Work program, initiated by Goodwill Industries of Kentucky in 2021, offers Kentuckians an essential means of transportation to their workplaces. However, sustaining the program’s impact requires additional donations to meet the ongoing demand.
Matching Individuals with Mobility Solutions
The program, spearheaded by Glenn Todd, matches individuals referred by Goodwill career coaches with bicycles, ensuring they receive essential equipment such as helmets, bike locks, safety vests, and educational materials on Kentucky bicycle laws and safety protocols.
Empowering Commuters like George Hill
George Hill, a beneficiary of the program, highlights the transformative impact of having access to a bicycle. Hill’s daily commute has significantly reduced from an hour and a half on public transportation to a mere 35 minutes on his bicycle, granting him newfound freedom and efficiency.
Addressing Transportation Gaps
Todd recognized a crucial need for alternative transportation solutions, particularly for those reliant on public transit. The Last Mile to Work program bridges the gap between existing transit options and final destinations, significantly enhancing accessibility and reducing commute times for participants.
Sustainable Impact Through Donations
While the program has flourished, refurbishing and distributing over 300 bicycles annually, sustaining its growth hinges on community support through donations. Todd emphasizes the vital role of donations in expanding the program’s reach and ensuring its continued success.
Meeting Rising Demand
With the program witnessing a surge in demand, Goodwill aims to distribute 350 bicycles this year, reflecting a growing need for accessible transportation solutions in the community. Each donation contributes to empowering individuals like Hill to overcome transportation barriers and access employment opportunities.
How to Contribute
Donations of bicycles and related equipment can be made at any Goodwill store or donation center across Kentucky. By supporting the Last Mile to Work program, individuals can make a tangible difference in the lives of fellow community members striving to access employment opportunities.
