Graduation Celebrated Amid Protests at New Mexico State University

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico State University (NMSU) celebrated the achievements of doctoral, specialists in education, and master candidates during their commencement ceremonies on Friday evening, despite protests that occurred the day before.

Smooth Commencement Amidst Brief Protests

The commencement ceremonies proceeded smoothly, with graduates walking up to the stage to receive their diplomas without any major disruptions. However, a brief moment of protest arose when one graduate raised a Palestinian flag during her time on stage, prompting an audible reaction from the crowd.

KFOX14 spoke with Mary Anangfac, a recent graduate who supported the graduate’s actions, stating, People have a right to express how they feel, right? It’s the land of the free. Right? However, Anangfac also emphasized the importance of peaceful protests, expressing disagreement with violence and property destruction. She remarked, I think that there would have been a better way. I don’t think we need to destroy property. Do your demonstration. Do your protest. But we can do it peacefully. Like Martin Luther did. We can do a peaceful protest.

Previous Protests and Arrests

On Thursday, prior to the commencement ceremonies, more than a dozen pro-Palestine demonstrators organized a sit-in outside NMSU’s Interim President’s office in Hadley Hall. The situation escalated, leading to Las Cruces police and New Mexico State Police intervening to clear the building after NMSU declared the demonstrators had to leave due to the building’s closure.

Several small scuffles ensued, resulting in the arrest of 13 demonstrators. Among those detained were individuals facing charges such as battery on a peace officer, criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, and resisting or obstructing. Some of the arrested individuals included Michael Andrew Garcia, Moses Abraham Stacey, and Nathan Elijah Tercero.

Future Commencement Ceremonies

Despite the disruptions, NMSU is set to host commencement ceremonies for undergraduates on Saturday, maintaining their commitment to celebrating the academic achievements of their students.

Conclusion: Upholding Academic Tradition Amidst Civil Discourse

As New Mexico State University honors its graduates, the recent protests serve as a reminder of the diverse viewpoints present within the community. While freedom of expression is valued, the university advocates for peaceful demonstrations and civil discourse as integral components of constructive dialogue. As the academic year draws to a close, NMSU remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering an environment where differing perspectives can coexist harmoniously.
