Grady Health System is set to address the critical need for emergency medical services in metro Atlanta by opening a freestanding emergency department in south Fulton County. This strategic move comes in response to the closure of Wellstar’s Atlanta Medical Center South and Atlanta Medical Center in 2023.

Filling the Service Gap

With nearly 138,000 emergency visits recorded last year at its main Atlanta campus, Grady Health System recognizes the importance of expanding its services to bridge the gap left by the closures. The new 20,000-square-foot facility will feature 16 bays for both adult and pediatric care, comprehensive diagnostic services, and an on-site helipad for critical patient transfers. The facility will be staffed by board-certified medical professionals.

He emphasized that as the population of metro Atlanta continues to grow, so does the demand for medical services. The project aligns with Grady’s broader initiative to enhance healthcare accessibility in southern Fulton County, complementing the openings of new outpatient centers earlier this year. Funding for the development of the 24/7 emergency department comes from both county allocations and federal grants aimed at expanding healthcare access.

Robb Pitts, Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, emphasized the urgency of the project, stating, No one should die early because of their ZIP code.
