Matthew D. Adams, a resident of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, has been sentenced to three years in prison for money laundering and obstructing the IRS.

Drug Sales and Financial Deception

Adams, who operated under the guise of MDA Property Services, sold drugs to an individual known as Individual A over a period spanning from 2008 to 2017. Individual A used embezzled funds from their company to purchase drugs from Adams. To conceal the illicit transactions, payments were made to Adams’s company, making them appear as legitimate services provided by MDA Property Services.

Lavish Spending and Financial Evasion

Adams’s dealings resulted in substantial income, with over $10 million paid to him between 2013 and 2017. However, rather than reporting this income, he indulged in extravagant personal expenses and investments. Among his purchases were real estate valued at $1 million, private flights, golfing outings, jewelry, gambling, court-ordered child support, accommodations in hotels, and firearms.

Concealment and Deception

Despite his significant earnings, Adams failed to disclose his income from drug sales on his income tax returns from 2013 to 2016, and he neglected to file a return for the year 2017 altogether. He utilized various methods to obscure the origin of his wealth, depositing some funds into personal and business bank accounts while cashing out the remainder, totaling approximately $5.3 million, at a local liquor store.

Legal Consequences and Restitution

During an audit in 2017, Adams misled IRS agents by understating the extent of his illegal income and falsely claiming that a substantial portion of the funds received from Company A was for legitimate services. As a result of his actions, Adams has been sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay $3,354,973 in restitution to the IRS.
