The Butler County Sheriff’s Office is reaching out to the public for assistance in locating the remains of two individuals connected to a decades-old cold case. Franklin Punkie Harrod, reported missing in 1997, remains a focal point of the investigation, according to Butler County detective Glenn Hopper.
Cold Case Resurfaces
Despite initial efforts, Harrod’s case quickly went cold. However, in a surprising turn of events, one of the individuals living with Harrod confessed to involvement in his killing around 2002. This confession led to the conviction of the three individuals residing with Harrod at the time.
New Leads Surface
After years of stagnation, the case saw a breakthrough in 2023 when it was reopened by Detective Hopper. This reopening led to the discovery of Ricky Nelms, another individual believed to be buried in Butler County. Hopper revealed that the same individual who provided information about Nelms also disclosed details about another missing person from Wichita in 1988.
Challenges in Locating Remains
Locating the exact burial sites has proven to be a challenging task for authorities. Butler County’s vast expanse, characterized by extensive pastures and open areas, complicates the search efforts significantly.
Seeking Closure for Victims’ Families
Detective Hopper emphasized the importance of resolving the case to provide closure to the families of the victims. He acknowledged the prolonged wait for closure, stating, They are waiting, and they are not getting any younger.
As the investigation continues, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the remains to come forward and assist in bringing closure to these long-standing cold cases.
