RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC State Highway Patrol investigates an incident where a trooper attempted to stop a suspect, leading to a high-speed chase and the suspect being shot after reportedly brandishing a firearm.

On Saturday morning, a trooper attempted to halt a speeding vehicle on I-587 near the Wilson and Greene County line. The pursuit ensued when the driver failed to stop, reaching speeds exceeding 90 mph.
Foot Chase and Confrontation
The chase continued onto US-258, concluding in Farmville, where the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The trooper pursued the suspect into a residential area, where the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at the trooper, resulting in shots being fired.
Suspect’s Identity and Condition
The suspect, identified as Kenneth Charles Kinard, 35, of Virginia Beach, VA, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the leg. Medical assistance was promptly provided, and Kinard was transported to ECU Health Medical Center for treatment.
Warrants and Recovered Items
Kinard had outstanding warrants from Virginia, including charges related to drug possession and grand larceny. Authorities recovered a firearm, drugs, and drug paraphernalia at the scene.
