LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A tragic hit-and-run incident in the Las Vegas Valley has claimed the life of a 63-year-old man almost two weeks after the collision occurred. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Robert Patrick Tully of Las Vegas passed away following the crash, which took place in the early hours of a Sunday morning.
The Incident
The crash occurred around 1:56 a.m. near Charleston and the US 95, with Tully reportedly sleeping inside a makeshift tent on the east side of Sandhill Road intersecting with Hawaii. The driver, a 20-year-old individual identified as Yester Yancarlos Paz-Zavala from Utah, along with a passenger, was traveling north on S. Sandhill Road when the collision transpired.
Details of the Collision
LVMPD stated that the driver veered off-road, crashing into the pedestrian’s location. After the collision, the vehicle came to a stop inside a nearby business premises. Despite attempts by uninvolved motorists to intervene and wait for the authorities, both the driver and the passenger fled the scene initially.
Arrest and Confession
Paz-Zavala, the driver, was arrested shortly after the crash. He informed the police that he had been visiting a friend in Las Vegas and had consumed one beer before departing. Claiming he experienced a flat tire and pulled over, Paz-Zavala stated that other motorists alerted him to the collision. Feeling unsafe, he left the scene, as per an arrest report. However, he was later encouraged by his mother, after the vehicle was traced back to her, to surrender to the authorities.
Victim’s Condition and Outcome
Tully was transported to UMC in critical condition following the incident, where he remained until his unfortunate passing. This incident marks the 69th traffic-related fatality within LVMPD’s jurisdiction in 2024.
