COLUMBUS, Ohio – The National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) has unveiled its lineup of events for Memorial Day weekend, aimed at honoring and remembering the sacrifices of U.S. military heroes.
Memorial Day Weekend Events
The NVMM has organized a series of activities to commemorate Memorial Day, including:
CrossFit Hero Workout – The Murph Challenge
One of the highlighted events is the CrossFit Hero Workout, known as The Murph Challenge. This intense physical challenge pays tribute to Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in 2005. Participants undertake a rigorous workout regimen to honor Murphy and other fallen heroes.
Memorial Day Motorcycle Ride
Motorcycle enthusiasts have the opportunity to join a Memorial Day motorcycle ride, where they can pay homage to veterans and fallen soldiers through a scenic ride across designated routes.
Gold Star Family Candlelight Vigil
The Gold Star Family Candlelight Vigil provides a solemn moment for families who have lost loved ones in service. It’s a chance for reflection and solidarity as the community gathers to honor the sacrifices made by these families.
Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony
The Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony serves as the centerpiece of the weekend’s events. Attendees can participate either in person or via livestream on Facebook, ensuring that all who wish to pay their respects have the opportunity to do so.
Honoring Through Flags
In addition to these events, the NVMM is inviting individuals to contribute to the solemnity of the occasion by sponsoring flags to adorn the museum lawn. For a donation of $20, a flag will be planted on the lawn, bearing the name, service branch, and rank of a fallen service member. This gesture serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men and women.
Colonel Bill Butler, U.S. Army (Retired) and acting president of the NVMM, emphasized the importance of remembering and sharing the stories of fallen heroes. He urged Americans to take a moment on Memorial Day weekend to honor those who have served and sacrificed for their nation.
New Exhibit: Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II
Coinciding with Memorial Day weekend, the NVMM is set to unveil a new exhibit titled Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II. Sponsored by the E.L. Wiegand Foundation, the exhibit sheds light on the remarkable story of the U.S. Army 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the Ghost Army.
This top-secret unit employed unconventional tactics, utilizing artists, engineers, and soldiers to deceive enemy forces during World War II. Through the use of inflatable rubber tanks, trucks, and planes, as well as false radio messages and sound effects, the Ghost Army played a pivotal role in Allied operations.
Technical Assistance
As the NVMM website experiences technical issues, individuals seeking information about the weekend’s events or wishing to make donations are encouraged to call (888) 987-6866 for assistance.
Conclusion: Honoring Sacrifice and Service
As Memorial Day approaches, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum invites Americans to join in honoring the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes.
