Houston police have made strides in identifying the baby boy discovered abandoned outside a southeast Houston residence earlier this week.
Discovery and Identification
The 9-month-old infant was found in a car seat outside a residence along Winthrop Lane near Almeda Genoa Road, situated just south of Hobby Airport, around 6:30 a.m. Thursday. Although authorities have withheld the child’s name from the public, they have confirmed his identification.
Welfare of the Child
Following the discovery, the baby was placed under the care of Child Protective Services (CPS). Reports indicate that he is in good condition and is currently undergoing evaluation at a local hospital while being tended to by a foster family.
Ongoing Investigation
Despite progress in identifying the child, authorities continue their search for the individuals responsible for abandoning him.
Details of the Infant
At the time of discovery, the baby was attired in a white and blue striped shirt paired with blue pants.
Legal Implications
Under Texas law, commonly referred to as the Baby Moses law, infants aged 60 days or younger can be safely relinquished at designated locations without facing legal repercussions. However, instances of abandonment like this one may lead to charges.
Call for Assistance
Law enforcement urges anyone with information pertaining to the child’s family to contact the Children’s Assessment Center at 713-830-3265.
What You Need to Know
Safe Haven Laws
The Safe Haven law, also known as the Baby Moses law, provides a legal and secure option for parents unable to care for their newborns. They can bring their infants, 60 days old or younger and unharmed, to designated safe places such as hospitals, fire stations, or EMS stations.
Process for Safe Relinquishment
Parents opting for Safe Haven relinquishment should approach an employee at one of these designated locations and inform them of their intention to leave the baby. No questions will be asked, and the child will receive necessary medical care before being placed with an emergency provider.
Avoiding Legal Ramifications
Parents who relinquish their infants under the Safe Haven law will not face prosecution for abandonment or neglect.
