Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Killed in Detroit Ambush
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard addressed the media regarding the tragic death of Deputy Bradley Reckling, who was fatally shot while investigating a stolen vehicle in Detroit.
On Saturday night, Deputy Reckling, along with two colleagues from the auto theft unit, was pursuing a stolen 2022 Chevrolet Equinox reported missing from Red Oaks Waterpark in Madison Heights earlier that day. The incident unfolded at Schoenherr and Park Grove streets on Detroit’s east side around 10:50 p.m. The suspects abruptly stopped the stolen vehicle and opened fire, striking Reckling in the head and chest. Fortunately, the other detectives nearby escaped injury.
Details of the Incident
Sheriff Bouchard described the event as an ambush, emphasizing the sudden and unforeseen nature of the attack. He clarified that Reckling was in an unmarked vehicle without a dashcam, which complicated the immediate capture of the incident details.
Responding swiftly to the scene, both Detroit police and Michigan State Police established a perimeter and apprehended three suspects. Deputy Reckling, a dedicated officer with nine years of service, leaves behind a grieving family including three children, ages 5, 4, and 1, with another child on the way.
Law Enforcement Support and Challenges
This is a devastating loss for our department, Sheriff Bouchard expressed, highlighting the need for both financial and emotional support for Reckling’s family. He underscored the toll that recent tragic events, including the Rochester Hills splash pad shooting and incidents at Oxford High School and Michigan State University, have taken on law enforcement mental health.
We need resources, Sheriff Bouchard stated, emphasizing the critical role of community support in sustaining officers through such challenging times.
Conclusion: Honoring Deputy Bradley Reckling’s Legacy
The death of Deputy Bradley Reckling serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily while protecting our communities. Sheriff Michael Bouchard’s call for support resonates deeply, urging both immediate aid for Reckling’s family and sustained resources to bolster the well-being of law enforcement officers in Oakland County.
