IMPD was involved in a SWAT situation in Indianapolis that lasted for over six hours, unfolding on the city’s near west side. The incident occurred in the 1100 block of N. Belmont Avenue.
Response to Disturbance
At around 7 a.m., officers responded to a disturbance report at the location. Upon arrival, they encountered both a female and a male inside the house. While the female exited the premises, the male individual remained barricaded inside. IMPD noted the suspicion that the male possessed a firearm.
Lengthy Standoff
The standoff endured for more than six hours before the suspect was eventually apprehended by law enforcement.
Impact on Local School
The site of the incident, notably, is situated across from Matchbook Learning School No. 63. As a precautionary measure, the school was placed on lockdown during the incident.
Statement from School CEO
Dr. Amy Galloway Swann, CEO of Matchbook Learning, communicated the impact of the situation on the school community. She stated, The situation began prior to school starting. The building has been closed for the day per IMPD guidance but all staff & students are safe. Students who were already on the way to school whose parents were not reached yet have been relocated with staff to our community partner’s site, Victory in the City. We are very thankful for the rapid support and assistance given by Victory in the City, IMPD, and IPS. Huge thanks to them for helping to ensure our safety and to making the day as smooth as possible for our students & staff.
