Abdukadir Filanwaa was a beloved member of the Indianapolis Muslim community, known for his humor and respectfulness. He had been driving for zTrip for 25 years, earning the admiration of colleagues and passengers alike.
The Tragic Incident
On September 10, 2022, James Riley, 31, and Alysianna Martin, 30, boarded Filanwaa’s cab after arriving on a Greyhound bus. An argument over the fare escalated, leading the pair to brandish a gun and force Filanwaa to drive them at gunpoint. Filanwaa was later found shot dead inside his taxi at 4 a.m. near 11th Street and New Jersey Avenue.
Legal Proceedings
James Riley admitted to shooting Filanwaa, claiming it was a misunderstanding. He pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping charges, receiving a 62-year prison sentence. Alysianna Martin also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Criminal History
Both Riley and Martin had extensive criminal records, accumulating a combined total of 19 felony charges in Marion County over the past decade. Their offenses primarily involved drug and theft cases, with a recent incident in June involving the assault of a woman downtown.

Imam Ahmed Alamine of the Indianapolis Muslim Community Association expressed the community’s sentiments, highlighting the uncertainty faced by taxi drivers: Many people are taxi drivers… [Some are wondering] is it going to be my last day when I leave home just like what happened to Abdukadir?
