Philadelphia, PA – Three former daycare workers face charges after leaving a 6-month-old girl alone inside a closed daycare facility. Janae Smith (22), Sydia Thomas-Ishman (23), and Gabriela Rivas (35) have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and conspiracy.
Neglect Discovered by Concerned Parents
The incident occurred on February 1st at the New Arisens Day Care on Whittaker Avenue. Concerned parents arrived at the daycare around 5:30 p.m. to pick up their daughter, only to find the building closed half an hour earlier than usual. Unable to reach anyone by phone, they alerted the authorities.
Police Intervention Reveals Alarming Situation
Upon arrival, police attempted to contact the daycare through the number displayed on the front window but received no response. With the help of other daycare owners, they eventually reached the management of New Arisens. However, access to the closed facility proved challenging, as the steel front gate could not be raised beyond 4 feet. Firefighters had to intervene, cutting through the gate to gain entry.
Infant Found Alone in Darkened Facility
Inside the daycare, authorities discovered the infant asleep in her car seat, left unattended in a corner of the darkened building. The child was subsequently taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children for evaluation.
Parents Express Shock and Heartbreak
Cam’ron Banks, the father of the infant, expressed his shock and disappointment, stating, We were recommended to this daycare by a family friend, and my sister worked there in the summertime, so we thought we were in good hands and to come out to this is heartbreaking.
Accountability in Childcare
This incident underscores the critical importance of accountability and diligence in childcare facilities. Parents entrust daycare centers with the safety and well-being of their children, making it imperative for such establishments to maintain strict protocols and standards. The charges against the former workers serve as a reminder of the serious consequences of neglecting these responsibilities.
