From bighorn sheep to bears, mountain lions, ocelots, and even the intimate moment of javelina giving birth, Miller has documented a remarkable array of creatures in their natural habitat.

However, his recent discovery stands as the pinnacle of his endeavors. In late December, Miller’s trail camera in the Huachuca Mountains revealed something extraordinary—a jaguar. This particular sighting marks a significant milestone as Arizona Game & Fish confirmed it to be the first time this specific jaguar has been photographed in the United States.

Expressing his elation, Miller shared, “Capturing a jaguar is phenomenal, but to photograph a new one, unseen before in Arizona, is simply mind-blowing. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack, a Holy Grail moment for me.”

Miller’s pursuit of such rare sightings has been ongoing for years. He recalled the initial inspiration that fueled his interest in trail cameras, mentioning “El Jefe” in the Santa Ritas as a catalyst for his aspiration to capture a jaguar on camera.

Mark Hart from Arizona Game and Fish emphasized the significance of this sighting, noting that this marks only the eighth unique jaguar spotted in the U.S. since the 1990s, with the last sighting dated back to 2016. These exotic felines are known to move between Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. Hart also highlighted the agency’s protocol when an endangered species, like the jaguar, is discovered.
