Monroe, Michigan – A year-long pursuit of justice culminated in the conviction of Steven Douglas Bails Jr., a 45-year-old Monroe resident, for the murder of 23-year-old Kayla Sedoskey. Sedoskey’s body was discovered on March 2, 2023, in the desolate confines of the abandoned Boysville Juvenile Detention Center in Frenchtown Township. Shot three times, Sedoskey was found bound and wrapped in a tarp, her mouth sealed with tape.
Conviction and Sentencing
Steven Douglas Bails Jr. was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder following a jury trial. Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery A. Yorkey announced the verdict, bringing closure to a community haunted by Sedoskey’s tragic demise. Bails now faces a potential life sentence in prison.
Co-Conspirators and Legal Proceedings
Of the six individuals implicated in Sedoskey’s murder, four have been convicted, including Steven Douglas Bails Jr. and his wife, Narena Bails. The pair, initially apprehended in North Carolina, were arraigned on charges in May 2023. In a separate development, Narena Bails and another defendant, Sierra Bemis, entered pleas of no contest to second-degree homicide charges in February. Both now confront the prospect of life behind bars.
Alexander Feko, another individual involved, pleaded guilty to evidence tampering and accessory to homicide charges in January. His sentencing could result in a maximum of 10 years for tampering with evidence, along with additional terms for aiding and abetting post-homicide actions.
