Lexington, North Carolina – The City of Lexington has released updates regarding a recent house fire that resulted in the tragic death of a long-serving fire captain, Ronnie Metcalf.
Remembering Captain Ronnie Metcalf
Captain Ronnie Metcalf, a 19-year veteran of the Lexington Fire Department, succumbed to serious burns sustained during the fire incident. His funeral, held on April 6, was a somber occasion as colleagues, friends, and family paid their respects to the fallen hero. Additionally, a benefit dinner was organized on April 24 to support Metcalf’s grieving family through this difficult time.
Investigation and Evaluation
The fire department has been diligently assessing the circumstances surrounding the fire for nearly a month, aiming to glean insights that could prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident occurred on March 26 on Fifth Street in Lexington. Metcalf, along with fellow firefighters, responded to combat the flames and conduct search operations within the engulfed home.
The Tragic Turn of Events
Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue team, Metcalf did not evacuate the premises with his colleagues. Instead, he remained inside the burning structure, ultimately requiring rescue himself. Tragically, Metcalf passed away from his injuries a few days later at a hospital. The Lexington Fire Department mourns his loss deeply, vowing to uphold his legacy of safeguarding the community.
Criminal Investigation
Concurrently, the Lexington Police Department has launched a criminal investigation into the incident. Surveillance footage revealed two individuals, Brandon Alan Hoskins and Stacie Blair Stegall, in and around the property prior to the fire’s outbreak. Both suspects, charged with breaking and entering, are residents of Lexington. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire and any potential connections to the suspects.
