Jeremiah Armstead, a student-athlete hailing from Long Beach, California, was recently recognized in Arizona for his remarkable journey from homelessness to college basketball success. Here’s a closer look at the inspiring story of this young athlete:
Jeremiah Armstead, currently a sophomore at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, stands tall at 6-foot-5 as a promising basketball player. His recent accolade, the Perry Wallace Most Courageous Award from the Basketball Writers Association, marks a significant milestone not only for Armstead but also for his university, as he is the first student from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to receive this honor.
From Homelessness to the Basketball Court
Armstead’s path to success has been one of resilience and determination. Alongside his mother, brother, and sister, he endured periods of homelessness, often living out of their car or in shelters for four years. Despite these challenges, he discovered his passion for basketball during his senior year at Long Beach Polytechnic High School.
Recognition and Support
During the NCAA championship weekend, Armstead traveled from Nashville to Arizona to accept his award. In a touching gesture, he brought along his younger brother, Marcus Armstead, as his guest. Armstead delivered a speech reflecting on his journey and received a plaque in honor of his courage and perseverance.
Before the ceremony, Armstead made a trip back to Los Angeles during spring break to support his siblings, Marcus and Armani Chanel Eason, who were participating in a school musical. The community of Long Beach came together to honor Armstead’s achievements, with members of local organizations and nonprofits, including Interval House, attending the event.
Interval House, a nonprofit organization, played a pivotal role in assisting Armstead’s family, particularly in securing housing for his mother and siblings. The musical, titled A Will To Rise Up, showcased the talents of Marcus and Armani, with Robert Daniels of the Do Good Daniels Foundation serving as a producer.
A Proud Moment
Throughout the musical performances, Armstead sat alongside his mother, brimming with pride as he witnessed the talents of his siblings on stage. Reflecting on the experience, he expressed gratitude for being able to witness and support his family’s endeavors.
Armstead’s journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, community support, and determination in overcoming adversity. As he continues to excel both on and off the basketball court, his story inspires others to persevere in the face of challenges and pursue their dreams relentlessly.
