LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach Police Department is under scrutiny following the fatal shooting of an alleged armed suspect, who authorities claim was involved in a home invasion. The incident, which took place at the 6800 block of Cerritos Ave, involved officers responding to reports of a person with a gun inside a residence.
Alleged Home Invasion Robbery
Reports indicate that the suspect, armed with what was later revealed to be a replica firearm, had broken into a home in Long Beach. Upon arrival, officers safely evacuated three individuals from the premises, after which they surrounded the house to confront the suspect.
Verbal De-Escalation Attempt
Authorities engaged in verbal de-escalation tactics with the suspect for over an hour, during which time the SWAT team was activated and prepared to intervene. Despite these efforts, an officer-involved shooting occurred, resulting in the suspect being struck once in the upper body.
Unclear Circumstances Surrounding Weapon
The Long Beach Fire Department transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A replica firearm was recovered at the scene, though it remains unclear whether the suspect possessed a real firearm. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported among civilians or officers.
Independent Investigation Announced
California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that the California Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting, aiming to provide impartial oversight into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
