PONCA CITY, Okla. – A local magazine distribution issue in Ponca City has escalated into legal action, including an arrest and a protective order against a man accused of removing hundreds of copies of the publication from distribution points across the city.
Kelsey Wagner, the Editor-in-Chief of Ponca City Monthly, expressed bewilderment over the situation, which began when staff noticed a significant number of magazines disappearing shortly after being placed for public pickup.
Distribution Challenges and Allegations
Initially freely available, Ponca City Monthly quickly faced challenges as large quantities of magazines vanished from racks at key locations like Walmart and the Ponca City RecPlex. Wagner, reacting to the disappearances, imposed a limit of three copies per person to mitigate further losses. Despite this measure, stacks of the magazine were reportedly found discarded.
Investigators apprehended Joel McBlair, 35, on charges of grand larceny, estimating the value of the removed magazines at approximately $1,200. Wagner alleged that McBlair had made derogatory remarks about the magazine, labeling it as fascist and communist, assertions she vehemently refuted.
Legal Proceedings and Protective Measures
The conflict intensified with McBlair facing legal consequences for his actions. Wagner secured a protective order citing persistent harassment and disruptive behavior from McBlair, emphasizing the impact on staff morale and advertiser relations.
Editor’s Perspective and Community Impact
Reflecting on the magazine’s mission, Wagner underscored its focus on highlighting positive community stories. She expressed disappointment over the ordeal, stating, When I started the magazine, I really wanted to tell people about all the wonderful things happening in our community.
McBlair is scheduled for court appearances, first for the larceny charge and subsequently for the protective order violation, highlighting the ongoing legal ramifications of the dispute.
