A man in Memphis, Tennessee, was arrested early Sunday morning after displaying a firearm to an officer during a routine traffic stop and then leading police on a chase through the Binghampton area.

The incident unfolded at approximately 3 a.m. when police officers pulled over a Lincoln MKS for obstructing traffic near the intersection of Faxon and Carpenter. The driver, identified as Jonathan King, was questioned by officers about whether he was armed and if he had a criminal record, to which he reportedly responded affirmatively to both inquiries.

Allegedly, King then threatened the officer by stating, Don’t take me to jail, before retrieving a handgun from the waistband of his pants and pointing it in the direction of the officer. Fearing for their safety, the officer took cover behind the Lincoln as King’s vehicle accelerated, initiating a pursuit that spanned several blocks.

During the chase, King allegedly discarded the firearm from the car window before eventually being stopped by law enforcement. Upon searching his vehicle, police reportedly discovered illegal substances including cocaine, marijuana, and Oxycontin pills.

Jonathan King, aged 51, now faces a multitude of charges including aggravated assault on a first responder, vehicle pursuit, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, tampering with evidence, as well as various drug possession and traffic offenses. As of now, no bail has been set for King.
