Alejandro Diaz, a resident of Highland Park, has created a haven for himself and his partner in an otherwise overlooked stretch of land.

A Unique Oasis Amidst Urban Challenges

Unlike typical homeless encampments that often provoke controversy, Diaz’s dwelling stands out for its serene location, far removed from businesses, schools, and conventional residences. Nestled beside the constant hum of the nearby 110 Freeway, Diaz’s abode features a concrete pathway leading to its entrance, while a charming garden adorns the opposite side with freshly planted flora.

Crafting a Home from Scraps

Diaz, originally from Guatemala, recounted his journey to creating this unconventional home. With resourcefulness as his ally, he installed ladders to access the small plot of land, utilizing a pulley system and salvaged materials to construct the dwelling he has called home for approximately two years.

FOX 11 reached out to Los Angeles City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez for comment on Diaz’s setup. His office highlighted ongoing efforts to assist unhoused residents in the area, including provision of services such as street medicine teams and mental health professionals. Despite recent successes in transitioning some individuals to permanent or interim housing, Hernandez’s statement underscores the daunting task of addressing the overwhelming homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, with over 46,000 people experiencing homelessness.
