TUCSON, Ariz. – Marana, a town already gearing up for the summer season, is encountering challenges in hiring lifeguards as shortages persist nationwide.
Lifeguard Shortages Across the Nation
The American Lifeguard Association reports that approximately one-third of the nearly 310,000 public pools in the United States had to close or reduce operating hours due to lifeguard shortages. Southern Arizona is no exception to this trend, with municipalities struggling to maintain adequate staffing levels.
Efforts to Address Shortages
To address the shortage of lifeguards and keep pools operational, Marana, along with other cities and counties in the region, has increased wages to attract more applicants. Unlike in the past, applicants are no longer required to possess Red Cross certification prior to applying or accepting a lifeguard position. Instead, individuals can apply without prior training, with the assurance that necessary courses will be provided free of charge upon hiring.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and pass physical fitness tests to qualify for lifeguard positions. Currently, Marana is seeking to fill one head lifeguard position and eight other lifeguard positions before the application deadline closes.
Optimism for Future Solutions
Kevin Goodrich, the Aquatics and Recreation supervisor with the Town of Marana, expressed optimism about attracting qualified applicants. He emphasized the positive work environment and the town’s commitment to providing a fulfilling experience for lifeguard staff.
Future Plans for Marana’s Aquatics Facilities
While Marana currently oversees and staffs only one pool for the entire town, plans are underway to address this limitation. A new aquatics center is set to open in the spring of 2025, promising expanded recreational opportunities for residents and potentially alleviating some of the staffing challenges associated with lifeguard shortages.
