Annapolis, Md. – The Maryland State Board of Elections (SBE), in conjunction with the Baltimore City Board of Elections, has provided an update regarding a vote discrepancy observed between election night reporting and verification reporting.
Identifying the Source of the Discrepancy
After thorough investigation, the SBE has determined that 584 more ballots were reported on election night, affecting 10 precincts across the state. These precincts include 21-01, 21-02, 21-04, 23-03, 24-04, 16-13, 22-01, 22-02, 23-01, and 25-04. The discrepancy arose due to two primary factors:
- Failure to Upload Results: Results from three ballot scanners were not uploaded on election night.
- Duplication of Results: Results from five precincts were inadvertently duplicated during the election night reporting process.
Commitment to Accuracy and Transparency
Despite the identified causes, the SBE remains dedicated to upholding the integrity of the electoral process. Post-election audit procedures are underway to ensure accurate and verified counts before certification. Additionally, internal procedures and best practices for election night reporting will be thoroughly reviewed and improved ahead of the upcoming General Election.
Upholding Openness and Transparency
Openness and transparency are paramount in dispelling any misinformation surrounding the electoral process. The audit process, along with safeguards for certification, functioned as intended, demonstrating their integral role in Maryland’s voting procedures. Voters can rest assured that their ballots were tallied accurately, with the assurance of verification through post-election audit processes.
Conclusion: Ensuring Electoral Integrity
The recent identification and resolution of the vote discrepancy underscore the commitment of the Maryland State Board of Elections to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. Through transparency, diligence, and ongoing improvements, the SBE continues to uphold the trust and confidence of Maryland’s voters in the democratic process.
