Measles Cases Confirmed in Will and Lake Counties

Reports of measles cases have surfaced in Lake and Will counties, escalating concerns over the spread of the highly contagious illness beyond Chicago.

Connection to Chicago Outbreak

Will County health officials have confirmed a case of measles, marking the second suburban area affected by the outbreak. Investigations indicate a direct link to the measles outbreak in Chicago, where 17 individuals have tested positive for the disease. Alarmingly, among the affected, 11 are children under the age of 5.

Urgent Vaccination Call

Muneeza Azher, Will County’s Communicable Disease Program Manager, emphasized the critical role of vaccination in combating measles. She stressed, Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others against measles. Azher urged individuals lacking vaccination to promptly seek the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Concerned parents with unvaccinated children over the age of 1 were advised to consult pediatricians to ensure vaccination.

Public Health Measures

Efforts are underway in Will County to notify residents potentially exposed to measles. Meanwhile, Lake County reported its first measles case outside Chicago, underlining the rapid spread of the disease. Measles, known to linger in the air for up to two hours, can manifest symptoms days after exposure.

Symptoms of measles include rash, high fever, cough, red/watery eyes, and a runny nose. Residents exhibiting these signs are urged to contact healthcare providers by phone before visiting in person to mitigate further transmission.
