Milwaukee has secured funding from the federal government aimed at bolstering its urban forestry efforts. The grant, specifically designated for urban forestry, is intended to address the issue of excessive heat in areas dominated by concrete and pavement within the city.
Biden Administration Allocates $12 Million
The Biden Administration has allocated $12 million to Milwaukee as part of an urban forestry grant. This funding is earmarked for the expansion of tree planting initiatives and the enhancement of the city’s tree canopy. Tom Perez, a senior advisor to the president, emphasized the critical importance of such endeavors in mitigating the effects of climate change.
When you have a tree canopy, especially urban tree canopies, [it’s a] very important way to combat extreme heat, Perez stated, highlighting the necessity of this effort. He underscored the nationwide significance of tree planting initiatives, citing examples in cities like Tucson, Arizona, and Milwaukee.
Collaborative Project for Community Resilience
The funded project, titled Growing Milwaukee’s Tree Canopy and Community Resilience, is a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders. Partners include the Milwaukee Forestry Department, Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee County Parks, and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.
The grant prioritizes several key initiatives:
- Increased Planting and Maintenance: Focusing on planting and maintaining trees to enhance the city’s green spaces.
- Depaving Schools and Businesses: Removing pavement to create more space for greenery and reduce heat absorption.
- Outreach and Education Events: Coordinating events to raise awareness and educate the community about the benefits of urban forestry.
- Growing the Urban Forestry Workforce: Providing opportunities for job growth and skill development in the field of urban forestry.
Targeting Disadvantaged Areas
An essential aspect of the grant’s implementation is its focus on addressing disparities within the city. According to the mayor’s office, all activities funded by the grant will prioritize disadvantaged areas of Milwaukee. This approach aims to ensure that communities most vulnerable to the impacts of urban heat islands benefit from the project’s outcomes.
