IRON LAKE, Minn. – Law enforcement authorities have released the names of the two men who went missing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) in northern Minnesota. Despite the challenging conditions, search efforts are ongoing for Reis Grams, 40, of Lino Lakes, and Jesse Haugen, 41, of Cambridge.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred when two canoes capsized after going over Curtain Falls in the remote area of the BWCA on Saturday night. Emergency calls were received around 7:21 p.m. The falls, flowing from Crooked Lake into Iron Lake along the United States-Canada border, present hazardous conditions. This location is several miles away from the nearest roads, making rescue operations particularly challenging.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery Operation

Three other individuals from the group were rescued during the weekend. Kyle Sellers, 47, of Ham Lake, was taken to a hospital for treatment, while Erik Grams, 43, of Ham Lake, and Jared Lohse, 33, of Cambridge, were airlifted out of the wilderness area. Despite the difficult conditions, search operations are persisting.

According to St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office division commander Nate Skelton, the search operation is transitioning towards a recovery effort due to the time that has passed since the incident. Drones and remote-operated vehicles are being employed to aid in the search.

Experienced Group Faces Tragedy

The group involved in the incident was described as experienced and familiar with the area. Skelton mentioned that they had previous experience in the BWCA and were comfortable navigating the wilderness.

Angie Grams, the wife of Reis Grams, reported that searchers have recovered canoes, shoes, and a fishing bucket. Multiple agencies, including the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Minnesota Air Rescue Team, Virginia Fire, North Air Care, and the U.S. Forest Service, have contributed to the operation.
