Baltimore (WBFF) – In honor of Earth Day, the National Aquarium presented its 2023 Impact Report, showcasing significant strides in environmental stewardship, animal welfare, conservation education, and community engagement.
Commitment to Environmental Stewardship
The National Aquarium spearheaded various local and regional conservation initiatives, including efforts to reduce single-use plastics and combat climate change. Through shoreline and community cleanups, volunteers removed 68,866 pieces of plastic debris from Maryland’s waterways, with over 96% being plastic. Notably, the cleanup efforts expanded to Ocean City, Maryland, for the first time.
Dedication to Animal Welfare
In 2023, the Aquarium admitted and cared for 79 rescued animals, returning 35 to the ocean. Advocacy efforts supported legislation for endangered sea turtles and established guidelines for marine mammal sanctuaries. The opening of the National Aquarium Stranding Response Center in Ocean City ensures faster response times for animal rescues and enhances triage and treatment capabilities.
Community Engagement Initiatives
The National Aquarium remains committed to accessibility, with nearly 100,000 guests visiting for free or at reduced prices through community access programs, representing a 25% increase over 2022. Programs like Half-Price Friday Night and Community Connections foster community engagement and outreach. As the regional coordinator for the City Nature Challenge, the Aquarium promotes biodiversity awareness through events like BioBlitz, where community members document wildlife observations.
Creating Sustainable Ecosystems
Construction began on the National Aquarium Harbor Wetland, a free outdoor exhibit in the Inner Harbor, slated to open in Summer 2024. This exhibit will recreate a salt marsh habitat, showcasing the Aquarium’s commitment to habitat restoration and conservation education. The Harbor Wetland exemplifies conservation in action, providing a habitat for local wildlife while educating visitors about wetland ecosystems.
A Vision for 2024 and Beyond
Looking ahead, the National Aquarium’s reimagined mission aims to connect people with nature, inspiring compassion and care for the ocean planet. Through memorable experiences, exceptional animal care, and conservation leadership, the Aquarium pledges to combat climate change, protect wildlife, and advocate for environmental stewardship.
As the National Aquarium continues its conservation efforts, the unveiling of the 2023 Impact Report marks a milestone in its commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
