LAKESIDE, AZ – In a harrowing incident, Navajo County deputies engaged in a shootout with a suspect, resulting in critical injuries, officials reported Saturday.
Deputies Respond to Unruly Person Report
At approximately 4:30 p.m., Navajo County Sheriff’s Office received a distress call concerning an unruly individual at a residence on Hilltop Drive in Lakeside, northern Arizona.
Upon arrival, a deputy encountered the suspect who immediately opened fire on both the deputy and the patrol vehicle.
Deputy Escapes, Special Response Team Called
Despite the perilous situation, the deputy managed to evade harm and sought assistance. The White Mountain Special Response Team (WMSRT) was swiftly summoned to the scene to aid the deputy.
Shootout Erupts, Suspect Injured
A tense standoff unfolded, culminating in a shootout between the WMSRT and the suspect. The exchange of gunfire resulted in the suspect sustaining critical injuries after being struck by bullets.
Suspect Hospitalized with Life-Threatening Injuries
Authorities promptly transported the alleged shooter to a nearby medical facility. However, due to the severity of their injuries, the suspect was later airlifted to a hospital in the Phoenix area for further treatment.
Investigation Underway
The Regional Critical Incident Response Team has initiated an investigation into the shooting. Fortunately, no deputies or members of the White Mountain Special Response Team suffered injuries during the altercation.
High Incidence of Officer-Involved Shootings
This incident marks the 27th officer-involved shooting in Arizona this year, highlighting the challenges law enforcement personnel often face in the line of duty.
