A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper is under administrative leave after a pursuit and shooting incident resulting in injuries to a man, near the Wilson and Greene County line.

The incident occurred during Saturday morning when the trooper was engaged in speed enforcement on I-587. A radar clocked a burgundy 2023 Kia Carnival speeding at 90 mph in a 70-mph zone. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to comply, initiating a pursuit.

Chase and Confrontation

The pursuit continued onto US-258 towards Farmville, where the driver suddenly stopped and fled on foot through a residential area and into an open field. Upon halting, the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at the trooper, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon, injuring the suspect in the leg. The female passenger surrendered without harm.

Suspect’s Identity and Charges

The injured individual, identified as Kenneth Charles Kinard, 35, of Virginia, was transported to ECU Vidant Hospital for medical treatment. Kinard had several outstanding warrants in Virginia, including charges for contempt of court (FTA) for probation violation, possession of schedule I & II drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and three counts of felony grand larceny.

Recovery of Evidence

Authorities recovered a firearm, illegal drugs, and drug paraphernalia at the scene, with pending charges against the suspect.
