Albuquerque, New Mexico – With the anticipation of an increase in electric vehicles (EVs) on New Mexico’s roads, Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) is taking proactive steps to prepare the future workforce for this transition.
Meeting Future Demands: CNM’s EV Training Initiative
Recognizing the growing importance of EVs, CNM is set to introduce a new program this fall aimed at equipping individuals with the necessary skills to meet the demand for EV technicians. Nicholas Aragon, CNM’s parking and fleet services director, underscores the significance of this initiative, stating, We have certificate programs that are training students to work on EVs and working them up to be in the industry.
Specialized Training for EV Technicians
The two-semester program will focus on training individuals to become proficient electric vehicle technicians capable of repairing, maintaining, and constructing EVs. These vehicles present unique challenges compared to traditional gas-powered cars, requiring specialized knowledge in handling higher voltage batteries and other distinct features.
Diverse Curriculum and Hands-on Experience
CNM’s curriculum will cover three types of vehicles: fully electric, hybrid, and plug-in cars. Curtis Garand, CNM transportation program chair and instructor, emphasizes the importance of practical experience, stating, They have to do all the electronics, all the electric motors, and it’s a real EV car that they have to drive and test on their own.
Students will have the opportunity to work on real-world models such as the Ford F–150, Toyota Prius, and Honda Civic, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in EV repair and maintenance.
Promising Career Opportunities
The demand for certified EV technicians is on the rise, with starting salaries ranging from 50 to 60 thousand dollars per year. CNM’s program aims to prepare individuals for employment at EV dealerships, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in this evolving industry.
Conclusion: Pioneering the Future of Automotive Technology
As the automotive industry continues to embrace sustainable practices, initiatives like CNM’s EV training program play a crucial role in shaping the workforce of tomorrow. By providing comprehensive training and hands-on experience, CNM is paving the way for a future where electric vehicles are the norm.
