Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke expressed regret for the confusion caused by the erroneous letters, stating, We sincerely apologize to taxpayers who received the penalty and interest letters erroneously. We know it likely caused some unnecessary anxiety, and we’re very sorry for that.
Error Details
The error primarily affected taxpayers who electronically filed their tax returns on April 30. Notably, users of Intuit TurboTax received the incorrect notices. TRD and TurboTax are collaborating to rectify the issue promptly.
Additionally, some individuals who did not use Intuit TurboTax also received erroneous letters. However, TRD assures these recipients that no further action is required on their part.
Clarification for Affected Taxpayers
For individuals who received letters regarding late filings despite filing electronically by the April 30 deadline, TRD advises checking their bank accounts. If a payment was deducted from their account by April 30, the letter is deemed erroneous, and no further payments are necessary.
TRD assures Intuit customers that they will receive additional information from Intuit if any discrepancies appear regarding bank drafts.
