New York City – Daniel Ohebshalom, notorious for amassing nearly 700 city violations across two Manhattan buildings, faced a violent assault in Rikers Island after turning himself in to serve a 60-day jail sentence for contempt of court.
Assault on Rikers Island
Ohebshalom, upon surrendering, endured an alleged assault by another inmate within 24 hours of his arrival at Rikers Island’s intake area. The incident left him with non-life-threatening injuries, necessitating treatment at Bellevue Hospital.
History of Violations
Ohebshalom’s buildings at 705 and 709 West 170th Street in Washington Heights have long been plagued by numerous hazards, including roach and rat infestations, lead, mold, leaks, and lack of heat, among other issues. Despite court orders, he failed to address these concerns, resulting in extensive city violations and unremedied apartment hazards.
Legal Consequences and Penalties
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams has labeled Ohebshalom as one of NYC’s worst landlords. He faces a $3 million penalty for accumulating thousands of building violations, including a $1.1 million settlement paid last year for violations in one of his Hell’s Kitchen properties. Ohebshalom’s incarceration marks a rare instance of a landlord facing criminal repercussions for substandard living conditions.
Inside Rikers Island
Rikers Island, located in the East River and attached to Queens via a bridge, has garnered notoriety for its deficient safety practices and understaffing issues. A 2023 special report shed light on the dire conditions faced by both staff and inmates, prompting discussions of a potential federal takeover and the city’s plan to close the complex.
Accountability Amidst Controversy
The assault on Ohebshalom underscores the complexities surrounding landlord accountability and the challenges faced within the criminal justice system. As efforts to address systemic issues within Rikers Island persist, the incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle to ensure safety and justice for all involved parties.
