Joined by Josh Rowan, the newly appointed Director of the Department of Transportation, Mayor Thao showcased the city’s commitment to enhancing its streets, particularly focusing on the notorious 60th Avenue stretch between Tevis Street and International Boulevard.

Mayor Thao emphasized that Oakland’s investment in refurbishing East Oakland, recognized as a low-income neighborhood, forms a crucial part of the city’s equity-investment strategy. Remarkable Progress: From Decades to Years

He noted that between 2000 and 2018, Oakland had paved merely 100 miles of roads—a stark comparison to the 200 miles completed in the past six years alone. In the last six years, we’ve accomplished what used to take us 20 years, Rowan affirmed, underlining the efficiency gains enabled by strategic planning and increased funding.

The transformation owes much to Measure KK, approved by voters in 2016, which allocated $350 million over a decade specifically for road repairs. With this funding, Oakland anticipates paving half of the city within the next five years, equating to an estimated 25,000 potholes filled annually. Director Rowan projected that Oakland’s entire road network will undergo full restoration within 18 years, marking a significant improvement in city-wide infrastructure.
