Tucson, Arizona – The Tucson Police Department (TPD) reported an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of a suspect. The incident unfolded in the 7400 Block of east Calle Merida around 10 p.m. on Wednesday night, April 3. This location is situated east of Kolb and north of Broadway, according to TPD statements.
Domestic Violence Incident
Responding officers were called to the scene following reports of a domestic violence incident involving a firearm. Upon arrival, officers engaged with two victims who were safely removed from the home. However, the suspect remained inside the residence, prompting a cautious approach from law enforcement.
Suspect’s Background
TPD revealed that the suspect had a history of mental health issues and was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Officers were aware that the suspect had access to firearms, adding complexity to the situation.
Negotiation Efforts
Efforts to communicate with the suspect were led by an officer with specialized training in crisis intervention and hostage negotiations. Despite attempts to peacefully resolve the situation, the suspect’s behavior escalated.
Escalation and Response
As the confrontation continued, the suspect was heard manipulating a shotgun. Additionally, it was discovered that the suspect had access to a vehicle. Police deployed non-lethal tactics to prevent the suspect from reaching the vehicle. Despite these efforts, the suspect retreated back into the residence.
Legal Proceedings and Investigations
Authorities obtained a search warrant related to felony domestic violence charges. Negotiation efforts persisted while detectives pursued legal avenues. After several hours, the suspect emerged from the residence brandishing a firearm, prompting an officer to discharge his department-issued rifle, fatally striking the suspect.
Investigations Underway
Following the incident, the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team was tasked with leading the criminal investigation. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is spearheading the investigation, while TPD’s Office of Professional Standards conducts an internal review to assess policy adherence. All findings will be presented to the Pima County Attorney’s Office upon the conclusion of the investigations.
No injuries were reported among officers or community members.
