The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is currently probing an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred late Friday night in Kansas City, Kansas.
Stolen Car Report
Earlier on Friday, a silver Hyundai Sonata was reported stolen. Later in the evening, officers received information suggesting the stolen vehicle’s presence near South 7th Street Trafficway and Interstate 35.
Citizen Report and Chase
Around 11:10 p.m., a citizen report indicated the stolen car’s location at the 1500 block of 7th Street Trafficway, with individuals seen fleeing from it. Subsequently, a KCKPD officer arrived at the scene, prompting three men to attempt an escape. The officer pursued them on foot.
Fatal Encounter
Preliminary investigations reveal that during the pursuit, one suspect took cover in nearby thick brush and fired shots at the officer from behind. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. Despite attempts at life-saving measures, the wounded individual succumbed to injuries at the scene.
Suspect Apprehension and Recovery of Firearms
Following the incident, a 16-year-old male suspect was taken into custody. However, the third suspect managed to evade capture and remains at large. Fortunately, the officer involved in the shooting emerged unharmed. Furthermore, authorities discovered two handguns in the vicinity during their investigation.
