More than 200 children in Kansas City are seeking mentors to provide guidance and companionship in their lives.
Matching Youth with Role Models
Big Brothers Big Sisters Kansas City is actively seeking volunteers to mentor children in need. Most of the children awaiting mentors are young boys who desire someone to talk to and learn from.
One heartwarming example of the impact of mentorship is Tyler Regier, an 11-year-old boy who found a close friend in Dillon Davis through the Big Brothers Big Sisters KC program.
Tyler expressed his excitement about joining the program, stating that he wanted someone to spend time with. Dillon, his mentor, praised Tyler’s selflessness at such a young age, acknowledging the positive change Tyler brought to his life.
Current Need and Impact
Kristi Hutchison, a representative of Big Brothers Big Sisters, highlights the urgent need for volunteers, with over 200 children currently on the waiting list. Most of these children are boys from single-parent families or nontraditional living arrangements like foster care.
Despite initially being strangers, many mentor-mentee relationships fostered by the organization evolve into lifelong friendships, enriching the lives of both parties.
Lifelong Bonds
For Tyler and Dillon, their bond transcends mere mentorship; they’ve become like family over the past year. Their shared experiences include unforgettable moments like sitting courtside at a KU basketball game, an especially meaningful experience for Tyler, who had never attended a game before.
Celebrating Milestones
Tyler’s journey is one of resilience and triumph, having overcome leukemia at the age of three. Now cancer-free for eight years, Tyler’s milestone was commemorated during the basketball game, with a special dedication from the broadcasters.
Making a Difference
Tyler speaks highly of Dillon, acknowledging him as one of the best big brothers one could ask for. Their one-year anniversary of being matched marks a year of sports, adventures, and invaluable companionship.
Looking Ahead
As they continue their journey together, Tyler and Dillon eagerly anticipate their next adventure: a tour of Arrowhead Stadium. Tyler’s hope to see Patrick Mahomes’ locker underscores the significance of these experiences for children like him.
